5 Black-Owned Business Incubators & Funds Accelerating Canadian Entrepreneurs Right Now

by Sean Findlay

Black entrepreneurship in Canada has moved past the “survival mode” era. Across Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and the Prairies, Black-led businesses are shifting from bootstrapped side hustles to venture-backed, scaling operations — but that shift only happens when founders know where the money and mentorship actually live. Check out our 2026 State of Black Business in Canada roundup for the bigger ecosystem picture.

This guide breaks down five of the most active programs helping Black founders access capital, mentorship, and scaling support right now — plus what you need to do to actually get investment-ready.

Key Programs & Funds to Watch

1. Black Opportunity Fund (BOF) / BOF Capital

The Black Opportunity Fund, a charity formed in 2020 by a group of Bay Street leaders, has evolved well beyond grants. It recently launched BOF Capital to expand access to business and housing capital for Black entrepreneurs — targeting a $100 million private equity growth fund plus a $50 million shared equity housing fund, with 80–85% of the growth fund earmarked for established, revenue-generating companies.

Best for: Revenue-generating businesses seeking growth-stage private equity, and Black-led VC funds seeking anchor capital.

2. BDC Black Entrepreneurs Fund (BEF)

The Black Entrepreneurs Fund is a $100 million equity fund backing Black-led businesses through early-stage (Seed/Series A) venture capital, Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition, and investments in Black-led general partners.

Best for: Tech and scalable startups with traction seeking Seed/Series A capital, or founders looking to acquire an existing business. See our guide to acquiring a business through ETA.

3. FACE — Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund

FACE offers loans up to $250,000 nationwide, with the minimum loan amount recently dropped to $10,000. Through its renewed collaboration with BDC, over 600 businesses have accessed more than $50 million in financing over four years.

Best for: Early-stage and growth-stage founders who need debt financing rather than giving up equity. Read our loan vs. equity financing breakdown if you’re deciding between the two.

4. DMZ Black Innovation Programs (BIP)

Toronto Metropolitan University’s DMZ Black Innovation Programs include an incubator, pre-incubator, and the annual Black Innovation Summit, which offers pitch coaching, $10,000 in legal support, and a competition for over $150,000 in investments and grants.

Best for: Tech founders wanting structured mentorship and fast-tracked investor visibility.

5. Pitch Better / FoundHers Labs

Co-founded by Adeela Carter and Amoye Henry, Pitch Better’s FoundHers Labs Venture Studio has engaged over 3,000 entrepreneurs and facilitated up to $500,000 in funding for Black and equity-seeking women founders in e-commerce, healthtech, and AI.

Best for: Black women founders wanting research-backed pitch coaching and community.

(Also worth exploring: BKR Capital, a VC fund investing exclusively in Black-led tech startups, and the Black Business Ventures Association’s Black Seed Accelerator for founders across the Prairies.)

3 Actionable Steps to Get Investment-Ready

1. Clean up your financial reporting first

Disorganized bookkeeping is one of the fastest ways to get a “not now.” Before applying anywhere, get your revenue, expenses, and cash flow into a system you can export cleanly. Our bookkeeping basics guide is a good starting point.

2. Tell a metric-driven story, not just a pitch deck story

Funds like BEF explicitly look for “demonstrated market traction.” Lead with numbers — retention, growth, unit economics — and use narrative to explain why they matter.

3. Leverage ecosystem networks for warm intros

Joining a founder peer group — through DMZ’s alumni network, Pitch Better’s community, or a local Black business association — puts you in rooms where mentors and investors already trust the introduction.

Your Turn
